Wantage is the birthplace of King Alfred the Great, and sits at the foot of the Berkshire Downs with the ancient Ridgeway path running along the ridge above the town. The Uffington White Horse — the oldest chalk hill figure in Britain — and the prehistoric long barrow of Wayland’s Smithy are both within easy walking distance along the Ridgeway.
A historic market town with good access to the Ridgeway and the Berkshire Downs prehistoric landscape, Wantage makes an excellent base for exploring one of England’s richest concentrations of ancient monuments on foot.
