Cartmel is a perfectly preserved medieval village centred on its magnificent priory church, set in a quiet valley between the Lakeland fells and Morecambe Bay. The limestone fell of Hampsfell rises directly above the village, giving extraordinary views across the bay to the Pennines and the Welsh mountains.
A tiny, hugely popular village famous for its priory, sticky toffee pudding and racecourse, Cartmel makes an unusually civilised walking base for the southern Lakes fringe — excellent food and accommodation within easy reach of the Lakeland fells.
