Canterbury is England’s most historic pilgrimage city, and the Pilgrim’s Way — the ancient chalk ridge route from Winchester — ends here after 130 miles. The surrounding Kent Downs AONB offers excellent walking through orchards, ancient woodland and open downland, with the Stour Valley providing easy riverside walking through the city itself.

A magnificent city with a world-class cathedral and excellent restaurants, Canterbury makes a superb walking base for the North Downs and Stour Valley. The city walls walk and the river path through the centre are rewarding in their own right.
