Matlock Bath occupies a dramatic limestone gorge on the River Derwent, where the cliffs rise almost vertically from the valley floor to give a surprisingly Alpine character. The Heights of Abraham cable car lifts visitors to the plateau above, but the surrounding walking — including the Derwent Valley Heritage Way — is equally rewarding on foot.
