Dunkeld and its sister village Birnam (of Macbeth fame) sit either side of the River Tay at one of the most beautiful points in Perthshire. The National Trust for Scotland’s Hermitage — a Victorian pleasure ground of waterfalls, tall Douglas firs and a dramatic gorge — is just a mile from the town.

A charming small town with a ruined medieval cathedral, excellent outdoor shop and a clutch of good restaurants, Dunkeld makes a wonderful night stop on the A9 corridor and a fine base for gentle Perthshire walking.
