Walking in Argyll and Bute
Discover walking trails across Argyll and Bute — from the Arrochar Alps and the Cowal peninsula to Oban, the Isle of Mull and the long sea lochs of the west coast.
Argyll and Bute is one of the most indented parts of Scotland, with sea lochs, peninsulas and islands, and walking that ranges from short coastal paths to serious mountain days. The West Highland Way passes through the northern edge of the area, near Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy.
Arrochar, Cowal and Loch Lomond. The Arrochar Alps, including the distinctive Cobbler (Ben Arthur), sit on the eastern edge of the area, within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The Cowal Way runs for around 57 miles through the peninsula to the south.
Oban, Inveraray and Mid Argyll. Oban is the main ferry port for the islands and a base for coastal and hill walks, Inveraray has a castle and woodland walks beside Loch Fyne, and the Crinan Canal and Kilmartin Glen near Lochgilphead combine towpath walking with ancient standing stones.
Mull and the islands. Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull, is a colourful harbour town with coastal and woodland walks, while Ben More at 966 metres is the island’s highest hill. Islay, Jura, Iona and Kintyre, with the Kintyre Way, offer many further routes.
Weather on the west coast is changeable and often wet, and ferries and midges both need planning for, so check timetables and carry waterproofs.
