Bridgnorth is a fascinating town divided into High Town and Low Town, connected by England’s oldest and steepest inland funicular railway, set on a sandstone cliff above the River Severn. The Severn Way long-distance path passes through, and the Severn Valley Railway continues south to Bewdley through the wooded river gorge.
A genuinely unusual and characterful town with a cliff railway and a heritage steam line, Bridgnorth makes an excellent base for the wooded Severn gorge between Shropshire and Worcestershire, combining river, forest and sandstone cliff walking.
