Thetford sits at the heart of Breckland — a unique landscape of sandy heath and the largest lowland forest in England, planted in the early twentieth century to stabilise the drifting sands. The Peddars Way national trail begins just north of the town, and the extraordinary Neolithic flint mines of Grime’s Graves lie within the forest.
An ancient town with England’s largest lowland forest on its doorstep, Thetford makes an excellent base for the unique Breckland landscape — flat, sandy and surprisingly wild, with prehistoric remains scattered throughout the forest.
