Thirsk is the market town immortalised in James Herriot’s books, sitting at the foot of the Hambleton Hills with Sutton Bank — voted England’s finest view by Country Life — just a few miles east. The Cleveland Way passes along the escarpment, with the famous White Horse of Kilburn cut into the hillside nearby.
A handsome market town with the dramatic Hambleton escarpment immediately to the east, Thirsk makes an excellent gateway base for the western edge of the North York Moors, with Sutton Bank offering one of England’s most celebrated viewpoints.
