Haslemere is the highest town in Surrey, sitting in a deep valley of the greensand hills where Surrey meets Sussex. Blackdown — the highest point in Sussex — rises immediately south, and the National Trust’s Hindhead Commons and Devil’s Punch Bowl are just three miles north, offering some of the most dramatic heathland walking in the south-east.
A quiet, characterful small town with good independent shops and a direct train from Waterloo, Haslemere is the finest walking base for the western Surrey Hills and the Sussex border heathlands.
