Hexham is the main market town of the Tyne Valley and an excellent base for Hadrian’s Wall walking — the finest section of the Wall, between Housesteads and Steel Rigg, is just a short drive north. The Allen Valleys to the south offer equally beautiful, far quieter walking.

A proper market town with an outstanding abbey, good restaurants and a direct rail link from Newcastle, Hexham is the most convenient and well-served base for Hadrian’s Wall walking in Northumberland.
