Lynmouth and its cliff-railway twin Lynton sit at the foot of Exmoor where the East and West Lyn rivers meet the sea in a dramatic gorge. The surrounding walking is extraordinary — the Valley of the Rocks is one of the strangest and most beautiful landscapes in the south-west, while Watersmeet is a National Trust woodland and waterfall paradise.
One of the most dramatically situated small resorts in England, Lynmouth sits at the foot of cliffs with the moors rising immediately above. The cliff railway to Lynton is a joy, and both villages have good B&Bs and restaurants.
