Downpatrick is the ecclesiastical capital of Northern Ireland — the burial place of St Patrick in the graveyard of its great cathedral, and the start of St Patrick’s Way, a 92-mile long-distance route to Armagh. The Lecale Peninsula stretches east to the sea, and the Mourne Mountains are visible on the southern horizon.
A historic and undervisited cathedral city with a good range of services, Downpatrick makes an excellent base for the Lecale Peninsula walking and the St Patrick’s pilgrim route — a landscape steeped in early Christian history.
