🚗Newton StewartStart Point

Newton Stewart is the gateway to the Galloway Hills — the highest and wildest area in southern Scotland, containing the Merrick (843m), the highest summit south of the Highland Line. The Galloway Forest Park, one of Europe’s largest forest parks and a designated Dark Sky Park, stretches away to the north.

A practical market town with a good range of services, Newton Stewart makes the essential base for Galloway Hills walking — the Merrick and the wild granite moorland around Loch Trool are some of the finest and least-known mountain landscapes in Scotland.
