Portree is the main town of Skye — a harbour of coloured houses on a sheltered bay, with the Trotternish Ridge stretching away to the north and the Cuillins visible on the southern horizon. The Old Man of Storr, one of Scotland’s most iconic rock pinnacles, is just seven miles north of the town.
A well-served island town with good hotels, restaurants and year-round amenities, Portree is the most practical base for northern Skye walking. The dramatic basalt plateau of the Trotternish extends for fifteen miles to the north, offering days of outstanding walking.
