Rhayader is the gateway to the Elan Valley — four great Victorian reservoirs set in a sweeping landscape of mountain moorland that supplies Birmingham with water and provides some of the finest and most remote walking in Wales. The town itself sits in the upper Wye Valley at the edge of the Cambrian Mountains.

A small, practical mid-Wales market town with good accommodation and an excellent butcher, Rhayader is the essential base for Elan Valley walking — one of the most beautiful and under-visited landscapes in Wales.
