Appleby-in-Westmorland is the ancient county town of Westmorland, famous for its horse fair and beautifully set on a loop of the River Eden. The Settle-Carlisle railway runs through the town, and the broad, fertile Eden Valley offers gentle and very pleasant walking in a landscape often overlooked in favour of the nearby fells.
A historic and very handsome county town with the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway running through, Appleby makes an excellent base for the gentle Eden Valley and the approach to the high Pennines around Dufton and Cross Fell.
