🚗AlstonStart Point

Alston claims to be England’s highest market town, sitting at over 290 metres in the South Tyne Valley on the western flank of the North Pennines AONB. Cross Fell — the highest point in the Pennines at 893 metres — rises to the east, and the Pennine Way passes through the town.

A hard-edged, characterful small town in one of England’s wildest upland areas, Alston makes a serious walkers’ base. The South Tynedale Railway — England’s highest narrow-gauge line — provides useful access into the valley.
