Newcastle in County Down is the main resort and service town for the Mourne Mountains — a small seaside town where the mountains really do sweep down to the sea, as Percy French immortally described. Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland’s highest peak, rises directly above the town.

A pleasant seaside town with a long beach, good accommodation and several outdoor shops, Newcastle is the natural base for the Mourne Mountains. The Mourne Wall — an extraordinary 22-mile dry stone boundary encircling the high Mournes — passes over many of the finest summits.
