County Londonderry runs from the walled city of Derry on the River Foyle, east along the north coast to Portstewart and Portrush, and south into the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains. It is a county of long beaches, basalt cliffs, river valleys and open moorland.

Derry-Londonderry. The 17th-century city walls survive as a complete circuit of around a mile, with views over the Bogside and the Foyle, and the Peace Bridge and riverside paths lead out along both banks of the river.

The north coast. Binevenagh and the Magilligan lowlands give clifftop and dune walking, and Downhill Demesne, with Mussenden Temple on the cliff edge, sits above a long beach at the foot of Binevenagh. Further east, Portstewart Strand and the paths round Portrush mark the start of the Causeway Coast Way.

Roe Valley and the Sperrins. Roe Valley Country Park near Limavady has riverside and woodland trails along the River Roe, and the hills around Dungiven and Maghera lead up into the Sperrins.

The north coast and the Sperrins are exposed, so take waterproofs and warm layers, and carry a map on moorland walks.
