Walking in Clackmannanshire
Discover walking in Clackmannanshire — Scotland’s smallest county, with the Ochil Hills, Dollar Glen and the River Forth.
Clackmannanshire is Scotland’s smallest mainland county, known as the Wee County, but it has plenty of walking packed into its small area. The Ochil Hills rise steeply from the villages along their southern edge, and the flat land to the south follows the River Forth.
The Ochils. Ben Cleuch, at 721 metres, is the highest point in the range and is reached by paths from Tillicoultry, Alva and the glens that cut into the hills. Dollar Glen, with Castle Campbell above it, has a short woodland path beside a burn and is one of the most popular short walks in the county.
Forth and the lowlands. Gartmorn Dam Country Park, near Alloa, has level lakeside paths and a nature reserve, and paths along the Forth give views of Stirling and the Wallace Monument. Cambus lies on the river west of Alloa.
The Ochil Hills are steep and exposed, and conditions can be much colder on the tops than in the villages, so carry a map and extra layers.
