Falkirk is a compact, mostly flat area in the Forth Valley, and its walking is built around canals, a Roman frontier and the shore of the Forth. Most routes are easy and can be reached by train.

Canals and the Falkirk Wheel. The Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal meet at the Falkirk Wheel, the rotating boat lift, and towpath walks follow both canals through the area, including the long Falkirk Tunnel on the Union Canal.

The Antonine Wall. This Roman frontier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crosses the area, and Rough Castle and Callendar Park give visible stretches of the ditch and rampart. Helix Park, with the Kelpies, is beside the Forth and Clyde Canal near Grangemouth.

Bo’ness and the Forth. Kinneil Estate, near Bo’ness, has woodland paths and a Roman fortlet, and the John Muir Way passes along the shore.

Towpaths can be muddy and busy with cyclists, so keep to one side and wear footwear that can handle wet ground.
