Walking in Angus
Discover walking in Angus — from the Angus Glens and the Grampian foothills to the red sandstone cliffs of Arbroath and the Montrose Basin.
Angus runs from the southern edge of the Grampians down to the North Sea. Its five glens cut deep into the hills, while the coast has red sandstone cliffs, sea stacks and a wide tidal basin that attracts huge numbers of birds.
The Angus Glens. Glen Clova, Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Esk and Glen Lethnot each have forest tracks and hill paths. Glen Clova and Glen Doll lead to some of the finest high-level walking in the eastern Highlands, including the Munros Driesh and Mayar.
Arbroath and the coast. The cliff path from Arbroath passes sea caves, arches and stacks on the way to the fishing village of Auchmithie, and Montrose Basin, a tidal nature reserve, has bird hides and shoreline paths just west of Montrose.
Forfar and the lowlands. Forfar is a handy base for the farmland and woodland of Strathmore, with its loch and park close to the town centre.
Cliff paths can be eroded and slippery, and the glens are remote, so carry a map and check the weather before heading into the hills.
