County Fermanagh is Northern Ireland’s lakeland, centred on the two great stretches of Lough Erne and the island town of Enniskillen between them. Much of the county is water, low hills and quiet farmland, with the limestone uplands of Cuilcagh on the border with County Cavan.

Lough Erne. Shoreline paths, forest tracks and ferry-linked islands make Lough Erne the focus of the county’s walking. Devenish Island, with its monastic ruins and round tower, and Boa Island, with its ancient carved stone figures, are both reached by boat from the shore.

Cuilcagh and the Marble Arch Caves. The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark covers the Cuilcagh uplands, where a boardwalk across the blanket bog climbs towards the mountain, and the Cladagh Glen below the caves has a gentle woodland path beside a river.

Enniskillen and the estates. Enniskillen Castle and the lough shore make an easy town walk, and the National Trust estates at Castle Coole and Florence Court have parkland paths close by. Belleek, on the Erne where it leaves the county, is a short drive west.

Paths beside the lough and across the bog can be soft and wet, so wear waterproof boots, and carry a map for the upland sections around Cuilcagh.
